Prof Dr. Shimul Haque is passionate about road safety engineering research. He is a specialist in econometrics and artificial intelligence applications in transport engineering and traffic safety. His research is focused on developing intelligent technologies to save lives and reduce road traffic injuries. He has established a strong track record on improving the theoretical understanding of road safety dynamics at transport facilities and developing efficient and low-cost countermeasures for road traffic infrastructure. Specific topics of his research include Traffic Conflict Analysis, Engineering Factors in Traffic Operation and Safety, Human Factors and Driving Behaviour, Vulnerable road users, and Connected and Automated Vehicles.
He is a co-founder of Advanced Mobility Analytics Group (AMAG), which provides a world-leading platform in transport analytics by applying artificial intelligence and machine learning that support decision-making for transportation network safety, real-time operations, asset management, and network modelling functions. AMAG is formed by three leading academics in road safety from three universities, including Prof Haque at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Prof Simon Washington at the University of Queensland (UQ), and Prof Tarek Sayed at the University of British Columbia (UBC). AMAG is a Software company that was mainly formed to translate road safety models and traffic operational algorithms developed by three co-founders into the cloud-based software and deliver it to road traffic authorities of state governments and city councils for their road traffic operations.
Prof Haque’s research is being funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and various government authorities in Transport. In addition to ARC-funded research, he has secured grants from various road authorities, including Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Brisbane City Council (BCC), Austroads, Department of State Growth Tasmania, and Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). His research projects often helped road authorities to implement road safety treatments and modify safety guidelines.
Prof Haque is a world-leading expert in Smart Transport Safety and has a strong track record in conducting road safety research. He has established a strong track record of publishing high-quality research articles in top-class journals and international conferences. His journal papers are published in journals like Analytical Methods in Accident Research, Accident Analysis & Prevention, Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, Safety Science, and Transportation Research Record. His publications are well received by international researchers, as evidenced by the citation statistics.
Prof Haque is an Associate Editor of the journal Analytical Methods in Accident Research, the 1st-ranked journal within the transportation and the journal of Accident Analysis and Prevention, the premier journal in road safety. He is also the Track Chair of Safety in the Australasian Transport Research Forum (ATRF). He is a trained road safety auditor, having been accredited by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (Dept of Main Roads, Western Australia) in March 2010 and the Land Transport Authority of Singapore in October 2010. He is an instructor of professional courses in road safety, including Road Safety Audit: A Safe System Approach, Investigation & Treatment of Crash Locations, and Sustainable Rural Road Safety.
